The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a Fitness & Wellness Section Manager to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With over 425 parks, 23,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.

Directs the Fitness and Wellness section as a member of the Park Services management team. Plans, develops and directs county-wide Rec Center fitness and wellness programs such as classes, personal training, fitness camps, on a fee-based and financially self-supporting basis. Develops and implements community health and wellness special activities/ events. Supervises programs and services delivered on a county-wide basis at 9 Rec Centers, schools and private facilities and through contractual arrangements. Directs the operations of county-wide fitness centers. Directs operations of fitness equipment repair and maintenance area. Designs, developments and implements county-wide wellness initiatives partnering with community leaders and other county agencies. Applicants should have experience recruiting, training and supervising professional fitness staff. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work on a variety of teams to develop, market and deliver member orientations and wellness programming and facility oversee management for Rec Centers fitness centers and county-wide initiatives. Good organizational skills required. Appointee will be required to work a varied schedule including some weekends, evenings and occasional overtime.

  • Develops long-range goals and strategic plans;
  • Prepares annual operating objectives and monitors progress toward these objectives;
  • Serves as a member of the division management team and interdivisional teams;
  • Reviews program budget expenditures and budget requests;
  • Prepares and submits a consolidated budget to the appropriate approving authority;
  • Develops management indicators for budget development and evaluation of organizational performance to goals;
  • Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures and implements or recommends changes;
  • Ensures that all data necessary for the functioning and management of the organization is stored and retrievable;
  • Supervises, evaluates and counsels subordinate personnel and provides for training and career development;
  • Analyzes programs’ use patterns and performance to goals, reports the results thereof and recommends improvements and changes;
  • Evaluates suggestions for new programs and improvements to existing programs;
  • Prepares periodic reports concerning organizational activities and accomplishments.

Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in recreation and park management or other pertinent related field;
Plus four years of experience in work related to parks or recreation, including responsible administrative/managerial experience, preferably in the applicable functional area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five plus years of professional experience in fitness and knowledge of exercise physiology and strength training principles. Current nationally accredited personal training certification and group exercise certification preferred (ACSM, NASM, AFAA, ACE, NSCA). Bachelor’s degree in health promotion, exercise science or related fields is highly recommended. Masters degree in health and fitness or related area. Five years supervisory experience. Excellent organizational skills. First Aid and CPR certification.

Driver's License (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective registry check and driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, walk, stoop, etc. To work with fitness equipment. Ability to work with and demonstrate proper use of exercise and strength training equipment. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
